Assuming "Tap to click" is selected in the Trackpad preferences, then tap-release is the same as click-release (or at least I think it is), but tap-hold is definitely not the same as click-hold. For example, in TextEdit, click-hold-drag selects text, but tap-hold-drag does nothing by default.

Howdy,
I guess I don't understand... I don't have Tap is Click set for my track pad (must admit it drives me crazy).
If I do a single click or click and hold nothing happens. I've always had to double click and hold to get the small magnifier (my default setting in prefs), triple click and hold to get the larger magnifier and quadruple click and hold for the full page magnifier. Has been like this for a long time on my system; at least as long as a single click removes the highlight from a synctex switch from source to preview.
If a single tap is the same as a single click or a click and hold I wouldn't expect the magnifier to be engaged.
Good Luck,
