[OS X TeX] pdfopen in MacTeX useful?

I do use pdflatex, but was answering the question of how to do this in the terminal.

I also believe that the pdf format that is output by pdftex is slightly non-standard. For this reason, I work in pdftex (TeXShop) but if I ever want to, say, submit my finished work to a journal, I will compile in terminal.
