The "numbering" is the label. It's by \labelsep away from the item  
text paragraph. Increase that value! (\itemindent and \listparindent  
could become non-zero, maybe when nesting.)

The construct "\leftmargin=1.4em" is more TeX than LaTeX, which you  
are obviously using. The correct syntax to change a dimension in LaTeX  
is:

	\setlength{\<variable>}{<some dimension with or without  
stretchability>}

You could also increase \labelwidth...
