It most certainly is (it is the command one uses to enter an opening bracket in the text). So are many other one-symbol commands, like  \!     \\    \^  \'   etc

Or am I missing something? The last time I checked, there were two types of commands in TeX: those whose name contains alphabetic characters only, and those "one-character" named commands.
