[OS X TeX] Puzzled by an accented i

Hi,

In a typos list, I need to produce an accented "i" where the dot really appears (obviously, to indicate how it should be done in the right way). However, I am not being able to produce one. The obvious, minimal code below gives me two equally accented equally dotless i's. And this without any inputenc or babel trick, and with an up-to-date MacTeX 2010 installation.

Is perhaps the latest (La)TeX even more smart than I ever thought ? Any ideas ?

\documentclass{minimal}
\begin{document}
\'{i} vs \'{\i}
\end{document}
