Better try to renew the appearance of the counters before entering the  
environment:

	\renewcommand\theenumi {\Alph{enumi}}
	\renewcommand\theenumii{\arabic{enumi}}
	\begin{enumerate}

There are also \roman{enumiii} and \Alph{enumiv}.
