You *really* wouldn't have liked the environment under which I first used TeX---it was TeX78 on a DECSystem-20 running Twenex, back in 1982. I tried to build AmSTeX on same, but TeX ran out of some resource, and so I wasn't able to build same. We then graduated to TeX82 on Sun stations, a marked improvement. ISTR building some custom formats (maybe AmSTeX again), holding my breath to see whether the format dump would work. I also STR that undump (now a historical relic) took a long time.
