I'd try to use "internal" graphics, i.e., PSTricks or Tikz. They don't  
fill up your disk with a dozen of different file types and resolutions  
and size adaptations to space in your document. The caption or legend  
of the picture does not scale to giant block graphics or something  
illegibly small. But if you want to create a rather realistic 3-D  
landscape, on a not yet discovered stony or watery planet, then other  
means are recommended.
