[OS X TeX] What is the proper spacing for "Smith et al. \cite{Smith}"?

Aloha,
When I use et al. in the middle of a sentence I should use intersentence
spacing, right? For example, "Smith et al.\ are great guys". On the other
hand it is usually good to place a non-breaking space before a citation,
right? For example, "Smith~\cite{Smith} is a great guy".
So my question is how do I combine the two? If I write "Smith et al.\~are
great guys", then LaTeX chokes.
Thanks,
Ramón
