The thing is, though, that I copied your minimal example into a new TeXShop document and it ran without a hitch. No command line or new engine necessary, and as Jonathan Kew pointed out, it is because XeTeX's default output driver does not support the old-timey, classic Mac PostScript fonts that the convoluted command line is needed. The TrueType version, though in this case just as old-timey, should just work. And does, on my system. So what are we, and Manuel, doing differently?
In fact it did not work with my TeXShop system; I only got it do work via the command line. I still can't get it to work with TeXShop. Herb S. said something about activating the appropriate engine, but I have no idea how to do that. Maybe you did so earlier, before you typeset my example. It's an interesting question, and one I'd like to know the answer to, but it's beyond my grasp to figure out what to do next. If you find the answer, I'd like to know about it.
