I've run into problems with font encoding that I believe have been solved by putting the 

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

AFTER  the font package and NOT before (I also use the spanish babel package).
Check and see if that helps:

\usepackage{lmodern}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\newcommand{\versalitas}[1]{{\usefont{T1}{cmr}{bx}{sc}#1}}%
