[OS X TeX] Page number appears with \pagestyle{empty}

The following works here;

\documentclass[article,twoside,a4paper,12pt]{memoir}

\begin{document}
\tableofcontents*
\thispagestyle{empty}

\clearpage

\chapter{Page numbers}
text text text

\end{document}
