Maybe you should rewrite the code using \pgfmathsetcounter/ 
\pgfmathaddtocounter and omitting the LaTeX \newcounter lines. In  
version 2.10 \pgfmathsetcount/\pgfmathaddtocount exist which might aid  
reusing the original code.
