Howdy,
You might be able to write a macro that does something like that. A
small part of the problem is that using $....$ is symmetric, you don't
know if you're at the starting or ending $ although you could make an
(unsafe) assumption that you always click on the inside part of the
equation.
It works with brace pairs because they are an asymmetric pair; try
double clicking on one brace and everything in between, including the
braces, is selected.
