Which also explains why the repository keyword was not understood by
old unchanged TL '09 tlmgr...
Does the PATH setting control the update scripts? The proper TL
infrastructure update is some BLOB (actually tar.gz) inside the shell
script, which also contains the runme.sh shell script. Which has at
the end a help text to explain a possible failure. And this text
cites "kpsewhich --var-value=SELFAUTOPARENT."
So my advise probably was very, very faulty! The first step needs to
be a change of $PATH setting so that TL '09 is contained in it and
not TL '08.
