Well, that wasn't my intent; I laughed when I saw that thread :).  To be
more directly helpful, I use siunitx, which is installed with TL 2008...but
I seem to recall you're using an older TeX.  I used something similar to
Herb's macro for years, but with a \thinspace between the digit and unit.
