Howdy,

Are you using TeX Live or MacTeX? MacTeX sets up a symbolic link  
structure and a TeX Distribution System Preference Pane so that /usr/ 
texbin points, indirectly through the structure, to the proper TeX  
binaries. Do you have the Preference Pane? If not, where is your TeX  
distribution?
