[OS X TeX] Missing $ inserted in a "variations" environment

This: when this box group is removed, then the error does not seem to  
happen when the group ends. But on the line where it lies.

I think it's all just a mismatch of cells on the lines, which either  
does not happen when one writes with discipline like you demonstrated  
or uses GNU Emacs, which in AUCTeX mode colourizes the & in red.
