I found Prof. Schulz's reply facile and patronizing, and of
no help whatever.
I made it very clear in my posting that I was perfectly
familiar with the concept of ``path'' and knew exactly
what its implications were. I had simply been unable to
get the system to respond to the way I'd set the path.
It turned out that there was a perfectly simple explanation
for the non-response to the system. And perfectly obvious;
it was right before my eyes and I (quite stupidly) did not
see it. There was a line in my .cshrc file
``source /sw/bin/init.csh''
*after* the point where I set my path. So naturally my path
got re-set.
This was dumb on my part, but thing is I *know* about paths
and what they do. Prof. Schulz's reply was of no help in
tracking down my (dumb) mistake.
I took a great deal of trouble to compose a complete and
clear explanation of my problem. Getting Schulz's response
was a bit like asking a question about stochastic differential
equations and getting in response a lesson in elementary
arithmetic.

Well, you're wrong! Your suggestion no. 1 was spot on; that is
(as explained above) the essence of what I was doing wrong. Although
the reality was even simpler than what you suggested. My path
was getting changed, not by some hidden dot file, but in the .cshrc
file that I was looking at. Right before my eyes.
Still your suggestion would've got me thinking along the right lines.
However Axel Retif had already drawn my attention to the init.csh
issue.
cheers,
