Pete,
Thanks! As usual: your reply is very helpful and complete.
I have disabled and again enabled springer.map. I still get font
substitutions, and the console complains:

I bought the Springer Minion fonts some long while ago, and had them,
and the linotype Syntax font, successfully installed in MacTex 2007.
For the minion font, I have installed the following font files in the
following subdirectories
In ...fonts/afm/springer/minion:
sminboit.afm sminregu.afm smitital.afm smscregu.afm
sminbold.afm smitboit.afm smitregu.afm
sminital.afm smitbold.afm smscbold.afm
In ...fonts/tfm/springer/minion:
fmnb8r.tfm fmnbi9d.tfm fmnrc9d.tfm sminbold.tfm
fmnb9c.tfm fmnbi9e.tfm fmnrc9e.tfm sminital.tfm
fmnb9d.tfm fmnbij8r.tfm fmnri8r.tfm sminregu.tfm
fmnb9e.tfm fmnbj8r.tfm fmnri9c.tfm smitboit.tfm
fmnbc8r.tfm fmnr8r.tfm fmnri9d.tfm smitbold.tfm
fmnbc9d.tfm fmnr9c.tfm fmnri9e.tfm smitital.tfm
fmnbc9e.tfm fmnr9d.tfm fmnrij8r.tfm smitregu.tfm
fmnbi8r.tfm fmnr9e.tfm fmnrj8r.tfm smscbold.tfm
fmnbi9c.tfm fmnrc8r.tfm sminboit.tfm smscregu.tfm
In ...fonts/type1/springer/minion:
SMINBOIT.PFB SMINREGU.PFB SMITITAL.PFB SMSCBOLD.PFB
SMINBOLD.PFB SMITBOIT.PFB SMITREGU.PFB SMSCITAL.PFB
SMINITAL.PFB SMITBOLD.PFB SMSCBOIT.PFB SMSCREGU.PFB
In ...fonts/vf/springer/minion:
fmnb9c.vf fmnbc9e.vf fmnr9c.vf fmnrc9e.vf
fmnb9d.vf fmnbi9c.vf fmnr9d.vf fmnri9c.vf
fmnb9e.vf fmnbi9d.vf fmnr9e.vf fmnri9d.vf
fmnbc9d.vf fmnbi9e.vf fmnrc9d.vf fmnri9e.vf
Do you see anything obviously amiss? Is there any other step you can
recommend to me?
If I can't trouble shoot my way out of this, I will be tempted to try
to mimic your set-up with Minion. (I've become unreasonably smitten
with that font.)
Kyle
