In GNU Emacs you can open the PDF file and search for /FontName.  
There'll be many lines containing font names like for example these  
(excerpt), retrieved by pdffonts from the xpdf suite:

	name                                 type              emb sub uni  
object ID
	------------------------------------ ----------------- --- --- ---  
---------
	RHILMV+LucidaGrande                  TrueType          yes yes  
no       6  0
	NREHPL+LucidaGrande                  TrueType          yes yes  
yes      7  0

It shows that fonts can be embedded in different text encodings.

Another option is PoDoFo: http://podofo.sourceforge.net/ (available  
via Fink).
