For the others on the list, this question came up on the google group for tufte-latex. I sent him here in the hopes that someone can explain what the issue is.
I think perhaps he has installed the BasicTeX with the misconception that he can automatically install dependencies a la MikTeX.
He simply wants to be able to compile the example documents with the tufte-handout class for the moment, I believe.
