I was just talking about the operating systems. This was not meant to be a recommendation for MS OS's, just to point out that they do this. I think they're aware that many of their users won't upgrade, partly because of fear that there will be problems with the newer OS, and they have a vast empire of resources on which to draw, so they can continue supporting the older versions, so they just keep doing so for a long time. For instance, as I discovered at http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&x=10&y=12&C2=1173, they will support Windows XP until 2014 (!).
