Hi,

to have the appropriate fontsize for notes in the
margin I use the command presented below.

\newcommand{\randbem}[1]{\marginpar[\mbox{\begin{minipage}[t]{40mm}
    \fontsize{9}{10}\selectfont\raggedleft#1
  \end{minipage}}]{\fontsize{9}{10}\selectfont\parbox[t]{40mm}{\raggedright#1}}}

The fontsize of the document is 12 Point, so a fontsize
of 9 for the margin notes seemed appropriate to me.
