Howdy,

That's what synctex in MacTeX(TeX Live) 2008 is all about. Not perfect  
but awfully good if you use pdf(la)tex. My experience is that it's  
nots as good with xe(la)tex or (la)tex---at least in the tex->pdf  
direction---because of the intermediate stages in pdf creation from  
dvi/xdv.
