Here is an update.  I wrote the author of arydshln, Hiroshi  
Nakashima.  He advised that it is essential to load longtable  
*before* arydshln.  Well, it turns out that he's right!   I was  
loading arydshln before longtable.  Following his suggestion to load  
longtable first, it appears that there is no (obvious)  
incompatibility now.  Yea! :-)

Unfortunately, I still experience an incompatibility between arydshln  
and supertabular even if I load supertabular before arydshln.  With  
longtable working, though, this is not so much of an issue for me  
now. :-)  I am, however, grateful that Nakashima has put it on his to- 
do list for some time in the future.

Many thanks to Nakashima for his prompt help.  BTW, his address now  
differs from that given in arydshln.sty; it is now  
<h.nakashima at media.kyoto-u.ac.jp>.
