[OS X TeX] Some minor problems in TS

OK, I must be doing something stupid. I tried the %!TEX method and it
doesn't work for some reason. The root and chapter files are in the
same directory, so I just said %!TEX root=QEAP.tex (QEAP.tex is my
root file) in the top line of a chapter file (I threw away
the .texshop file). It now insists on ignoring the root file and
typesetting the chapter file alone. What have I done wrong? (I assume
I don't need the .texshop file since some "preprocessor" is parsing
the %!TEX construction).
Thanks.
