[OS X TeX] What is hijacking a thread?

I had used pine on Sun Solaris and have just set up alpine (using imap to the 
Sun) on my mac.  I also use Thunderbird, mostly because of its spam filtering. 
Is there a way to do spam filtering with alpine?
