Precisely. The apa class uses the endfloat package which suffers from this
because it switches to verbatim mode for the floats for grabbing their
contents and storing them for later. The endfloat manual describes this in
§10.1.
texdoc endfloat
from Terminal.app will get you the manual (in case you didn't know).
