[OS X TeX] advice on converting word w/math symbols to TeX

It's been years since I did it but, in the same situation, here is  
what I think I did:

There is a way to let Word show the code it uses for subscripts.  
Then, I searched in Word for that code and replaced by the LaTex code  
$_{greek  symbol}$ or $_{\text{words}}$ which I then copy-pasted in  
the LaTeX source.

But I can't remember how it worked out in practice as I had other  
stuff than subscripts to deal with and decided to forget about the  
whole thing and just rewrite.
