That's indeed a very old version -- teTeX-based -- two or three years
old at least. Not sure how it interacts with a current TeXShop, but
indeed when invoked in TeX and Ghostscript mode it's a PDF file which
is produced (as indicated "Output written on main.pdf") whereas a DVI
file should be produced.
Hence no wonder that dvips complains that "DVI file can't be opened".
Unless you've a specific reason to stick to teTeX, I would suggest to
install either MacTeX-2007 or the current gwTeX i-Package.
