Sorry, no such solace here.

I get visually identical (so far as I can tell) outputs,
using  TeXshop 2.14-svn  under  MacOS X 10.4.11 .

My fonts are from:

  (Latin Modern)
   .../texmf/fonts/type1/public/lm/lmr10.pfb
   .../texmf/fonts/type1/public/lm/lmsy10.pfb

(Computer Modern)
.../texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/bluesky/cm/cmr10.pfb
.../texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/bluesky/cm/cmsy10.pfb

I'd suggest that you create a screen-shot to show us what you get,
and attach your .log file or Console outputs --- both using LM
and non-LM fonts --- so we can try to spot any significant differences.
