That wrong! This directory is not searched when looking for TFM files.  
Says kpsewhich (after minor editing):

$ kpsewhich --show-path=tfm | tr : '\n'

Place for local additions is:


if you want them user-specific, and:


if you want them system-wide. Similar for MAP files, PFB files, etc.

If you installed in ~/Library/texmf/, after installation run (assuming  
there's a MAP file Minion.map say containing font mapping information  
for the Minion fonts):

sudo updmap-sys --enable Map Minion.map

If you installed in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/, after  
installation run:

sudo -H updmap-sys --enable Map Minion.map
