Add the line

\usepackage{graphicx}

in your preamble? How old is the file? Does it contain a

\documentclass...

near the beginning of the file? (I'm trying to figure out if it goes  
back to LaTeX 2.09 or is really AMS-TeX or LaTeX2e.)
