which is likely to give a more comprehensive overview than reading the
list where people largely respond to queries rather than trying to set
out full sets of instructions. At least, I think that's the idea.
TeX Live does not recommend an installation owned by root. This is
likely why the standard instructions don't mention using sudo etc. It
is definitely safer to follow that recommendation. It is easier,
however, to ignore it in at least the case of OS X and that's what the
official TeX Live installation for OS X does.
