It seems to me, then, that macports should be written off as  
incompatible with TeXShop, etc, as self-contained seems to be the goal  
(or more accurately, only self compatible). Someone interested in  
using MacPorts would need to then create a TeXShop port for macports  
and maintain it. Likewise for anything else not otherwise compatible.
