Folks,

I already replied privately to this message. The short answer:  
TeXShop's binary path preference does not allow colon separated lists  
of paths. The longer answer: all of this would be automatic without  
any reconfiguration of front ends or utilities, if only MacPorts  
installed the TeX Distribution Data Structure by Jerome Laurens and  
Gerben Wierda.
