[OS X TeX] Can't see ligatures with lucida fonts in pdf files

Sorry, I was out of town for a few days. The ultimate answer is  
disappointing: rebooting fixed it.

I don't know what the problem was. I eventually looked at console.log  
and saw that a bunch of apps (including TeXShop and the Finder) were  
logging font errors. (Though I didn't see anything funny about the  
Finder display.) So I rebooted and the problem disappeared.  If it  
recurs I'll have to investigate further.
