[OS X TeX] Labeling the rows and columns of a matrix

I've done some looking around and searching the forum and haven't
found a solution to my dilemma. I have students that want to create a
matrix with the rows labeled and the columns labeled with the labels
being appropriately centered and outside any delimiters. Is this
possible? I'm sure it is since I have seen such matrices in books,
but it must be the case that one can't use a matrix environment. Do I
need to look at tabular?
