[OS X TeX] "I wish this worked a bit differently" #2

Using TeXShop 2.14 , when I want to select foo in

foo_{2}

what gets selected is

foo_

By the way, when I type _ I get of course _{} but how do I get just _?

I once found out but then completely forgot.
