[OS X TeX] Accessing an external texmf directory?

It would work, but rather inefficiently: some 100 MB of data would be  
searched for files first! And it would switch off any user  
preferences/additions ...

Why not add another TEXMFUNX variable, describing the NFS mount  
point, in texmf.cnf and add it to $TEXMF? And hopefully the NFS  
server's system administrator is running maketexlsr or such for the  
exported share.
