Howdy,

I'm not sure if this will help but there are some extra keybindings  
you can set up (I'll get to that in a bit) that allow you to set an  
invisible mark at some point, move the insertion point/cursor to  
another point and then select between the mark and the insertion  
point (that might be what handy in the case you mention) or swap the  
the mark and insertion point (handy to jump between two points in a  
file).

Download KeyBindings.zip from <http://homepage.mac.com/herbs2/> and  
follwo the installation directions.

The keybindings I chose were Ctl-X Space (yes... that's a two  
successive key command) to set the mark, Ctl-X Ctl-M to select  
between the mark and the insertion point and Ctl-X Ctl-X to swap mark  
and insertion point.

All you emacs fans start to smile :-).
