For some administrative tasks (example: editing the sudoers file), vi is
necessary because of its precision. It does exactly what it is told, not
getting smart on you and transforming tabs into spaces, adding spaces at
the end or wrapping lines like emacs has a habit of doing.
Most of the time you can get away with just 5 easy to remember vi commands
i to go into editing mode (indicated by INSERT in the bottom line)
Esc to get out of editing mode (the "esc" key)
:x to save and exit (equivalent variants ":wq" or "ZZ")
:q to exit without saving if you haven't changed anything
:q! to exit without saving if you did change something
