[OS X TeX] Poor performance on a MacBookPro

what is the output of
kpsewhich -show-path=tex -progname=pdflatex| sed 's/:/\
/g'

(yes that is a newline in the middle of that command-line)
It should give a list of directories that are searched for input files.

Also give the output of
kpsewhich texmf.cnf
As it may give further clues.
