 | This may just be mis-described, but LaTeXit resides within the TeX
 | folder of your Applications folder. It's not in /usr/texbin (which
 | points to the root of the whole TeX distribution currently active.)

You are correct. I've been wandering around a good
bit and evidently got lost. LaTeXiT is in the
/Applications/TeX folder. I did, though, delete
/Applications/LaTeXiT as I did not think it wise
to have two of them.

 | This looks like you're using xelatex. Did you check in the
 | preferences of LaTeXit under Composition --> Behaviour that xelatex
 | is the default behaviour?

Ah, my parsing error. I understood Preferences>Composition
to be asking me to set what each of those three things was
supposed to do, not which of the three I wanted to use.
(Sort of underscored by the MacTeX instructions to click
each radio button in succession and reset the corresponding
lines, which I did but that left the last button, latex+dvipdf,
as the one highlighted.)

So, I check xelatex, leave in my font directives, and
use as input simply "1<2" -- and things improve to where
now get only one error

unexpected error, please see "LaTeX > Display last log"

which is reproduced below.

Forgive me my naievete', and thank you for your assistance.
