[OS X TeX] A question about Metafont

Why did the makers of programs like pdftex, pdflatex (and previous  
programs based on ps instead of pdf) choose to use Metafont instead  
of Postscript ?

This make the use of popular Postscript fonts very hard (see all the  
posts on this subject on the list). On the other side, when you read  
the TeX book, you do not see that TeX is so indissolubly linked to  
Metafont.
