To know which is the most recent release of such a command-line tool,
you have to consult its project site. To stay on the current, you
subscribe to the corresponding mailing list or rss-feed.
To know which version you are going to install, you check:
- i-installer: at the bottom of the readme file
- MacTeX: ???
- fink: at the fink project site you can check the version number
available for both branches (stable and instable)
