I don't know. I'd prefer not to do that (erase and reinstall) if that
can be avoided:
- A couple of years ago I did Archive & Install repeatedly (three or
four times a year say), when my system started to behave oddly and I
thought there could be conflicting extensions, initializations files,
software which I had installed for testing purposes and which had left
unwanted pieces scattered here and there after being removed, etc.
Every time I thought it would take a day, and I ended up spending two
or three days or more on it, reinstalling each software one by one
after OS X was up and running. And every time, the problem which I had
attempted to cure was still with me at the end of the process, and
turned out to have another origin.
- Using Migration Manager means that all preference files and such are
put back in place, right? With Tiger and before, I used Archive &
Install of Mac OS X precisely to avoid that, namely start up with a
clean OS and user setup, and install only these pieces of software
afterwards which I was intending to use, in a very controlled way.
With Leopard the equation is different: all the pieces associated with
each additional software and installed in various subdirectories of /
Library are put back in place at the end of the Archive & Install
process. The good of it is that your computer is immediately
operational after the Archive & Install (only the pieces installed at
invisible places like /usr/local -- unfortunately that includes TeX --
need to be reinstalled). But the bad of it is that Archive & Install
is no help to start up with a clean slate, and that you need instead
to archive all your data, erase your hard drive and reinstall from
scratch. I definitely don't have time for that.
