BTW, pstoedit installed by i-installer is 3.42; compiling current 3.44
results in

Mercury:victor117%./pstoeditdyld: Symbol not found: _jpeg_resync_to_restart
  Referenced from: /usr/local/lib/libgd.2.dylib
  Expected in: flat namespace

Trace/BPT trap
Mercury:victor118%yld: Symbol not found: _jpeg_resync_to_restart
tcsh: yld:: Too many arguments.
  Referenced from: /usr/local/lib/libgd.2.dylib
  Expected in: flat namespace

which obviously does not work.
