Actually xpdf does not seem to need t1lib; I compiled xpdf (and it
works) with freetype and motif. ./configure (xpdf) complained when two
latter are not found [so I compiled them], but does not complain if
t1lib is not (but somehow it could be in my system already installed
by gwtex f.e.)
